How did you learn fly fishing?
In my childhood I did all kinds of fishing. Both bait and lure fishing.
Like many fly fishermen, I watched movie “A River Runs Through It”, and I was attracted by fly fishing. I though, that I can be cool like Brad Pitt!
My first step was to go to a fly fishing shop, buy fishing tackle and had them tell me where to go to catch my first fish.
It’s a difficult thing to catch a fish in the beginning. But luckily, I could catch some amago, which is a Japanese trout related fish. And, that made me go out to a river about every week. While doing that much fishing, I was acquiring fishing techniques naturally.
But there is a wall where it’s difficult to get over by the self-taught style. Casting in particular is such a thing.
So, later I took expert casting lessons from a fly fishing shop. It isn’t necessary to be an expert. But I think, if possible, it’s good to learn casting, at first.
It’s important to go out to a river as much as possible. Without experiencing fly fishing out in the river it isn’t possible to utilize casting techniques.
But the most important thing, in my opinion is to have a fly-fishing friend, who is the partner that goes fishing with you and who is the rival who competes for a catch. Best fishing partner will keep your motivation up. To always go fishing and to become better than him.
